Nottingham is a vibrant city, a great place in which to live, work and have fun. However, despite the best efforts of businesses, shops and other organisations working together to keep Nottingham crime-free, there has been an increase in recent years of hate crimes being committed.

What is hate crime?

A Hate Crime is:

“Any incident or crime which is perceived by the victim or any other person as being motivated by hostility and prejudice”

Nottinghamshire Police record all reported hate crime but most hate crime falls within the following strands:

• Race

• Religion

• Disability

• Sexual orientation

• Transgender identity

• Misogyny

• Sub-culture

From verbal abuse, intimidation and bullying, through to harassment and physical violence, we do not tolerate any such behaviour and we encourage you to report it if you or someone you know has been a victim of hate crime.

Nottinghamshire Police take all reported incidents very seriously and handle them in the strictest of confidence.

No one should be subjected to any type of hate crime and we want everyone to feel free to go out and enjoy all the wonderful things Nottingham has to offer.

Not in Nottingham Scheme

Nottinghamshire Police, Nottingham City Council and Nottingham Business Improvement District (BID) are working together to tackle hate crime in our city and make Nottingham welcome to everyone. The Not in Nottingham Scheme is a Home Office-funded initiative, aimed at reducing incidents of hate crime, particularly during the evening and late at night – whether they occur in a pub, club, restaurant or on public transport.

Our No Place for Hate campaign includes a charter supported by hundreds of Nottingham businesses and voluntary organisations, all promoting the campaign to reinforcing the message that hate crime will not be tolerated here and that there are serious consequences to offensive behaviour.
